Get Funky - Take 5

Long time, no blogging! It's been over a month since I last updated my blog as the PC was out of action due to a virus - probably my fault for going on a dodgy site - but my Tech Support Expert (No 1 son) finally managed to get it sorted out, then family life just got in the way so I've not been entering Challenges and only made cards when absolutely necessary. I do admire the folks who juggle job, family and friends and still manage to create and blog on a daily basis - but I'm going to try harder from now on.
The push I needed to get creating was realizing that I only had a few days to make my entry for the Get Funky Challenge, which I like to enter, but the theme of 'Take Five' requires at least five different papers and my limit is usually three so to use five was well out of my comfort zone.





I have risen to the challenge and managed to use not five but .... eight, they are all from the Glad Rags collection on 'Colour Me Happy'. I chose this collection then printed eight of the papers to make my selection from and used 'Martha and Presents' from the Digi Stamp Boutique for the focal point. Rather than colour the image I decided to paper piece it in order to use the different papers and only the face and hands are coloured with Promarkers. I've also added bunting which enabled me to do more paper piecing so all eight papers did get used. A few gems and a length of ribbon were the finishing touches.

Penny Black Saturday Challenge Week 119

This is a a card I made for the latest challenge over at PBSC, and this week there is a sketch to follow. I wasn't very happy with the colouring on the first image that I was going to use so a last minute substitution was made. This one was first stamped onto the background, then I stamped a second image onto white card, cut it out and stuck it on top. It didn't need much colouring to finish it off, just the bird, bee and a bit of grey on the sheep for shading. The patterned papers were designed by Kirsty Wiseman and the pink is some Funky Hand paper that I had left over from another project. I haven't put a sentiment on yet as I'm not sure who it's for, though I do need some thank you cards for children so that's looking likely.

Gift Box with 3D Flower

After winning the August challenge at Get Funky with this Gift Bag I was inspired to make something for the September Challenge of a 'Fabulous Funky Floral Fantasy' which must include 3D flowers. Although I make many things my current obsession is papercrafting, mainly cardmaking with a bit of scrapbooking thrown in, but for this challenge I decided to make a box.
I used a collection from 'Colour Me Happy' which appealed to me because it included my favourite colour green. The small flowery paper and the plainish green for the box and lid were printed on 300g white card and for the flower I used 120g paper, printed in pale pink on the front and pale green on the reverse.
I made my own template for the box but took inspiration from one I saw a couple of years ago for the flap-closure. It's the same on the bottom but has been glued together. An hexagonal piece of card with a ribbon loop goes inside before closing the flaps to keep the box rigid.
I could have stuck the flower directly on top of the box but thought that it would get spoiled when opening, so I made a lid to go on top. My first effort was a bit snug - well too small really - so this is version two ( I 'll now have to make another box to go with the first lid - can't throw it away).
For the flower I made a template, then one slightly smaller and a third even smaller and cut two of each to give six layers. These were sprayed with water, scrunched up, dried with heat gun then scrunched again, then I added pink chalk to the edges and made a frilly bit for the middle before spraying with 'Spray and Sparkle'. After attaching it to the box lid I stuck three small green gems in the center to finish it off.

Penny Black Saturday Challenge Week 118

I made this card with a MEN/BOYS theme for the Penny Black Saturday Challenge but have had so many problems with the internet, then my sewing machine, then Mr Blogger that it is probably too late now but I may as well post it anyway. One card is in the bin because my sewing machine kept jamming so I wasn't going to bother but then I decided to try again and it co-operated (sort of) so this card is the result. Image Penny Black of course, coloured with ProMarkers and the papers are Funky Hand from the Funky Seasons CD.




Edited: It's been pointed out to me that this card also fits this months challenge at Penny Black at Allsorts which is PUNCH AWAY. I am a follower of this blog and had seen what the challenge was for September but then promptly forgot. I'm not very good at combining challenges and tend to stick to one at a time unless I realise that they are asking for similar things. I did actually use a punch for the squares, it's a 3.5cm one by Woodware. Thanks Jules.

Gift bag with a pocket

The August challenge at Get Funky is POCKETS. Well I've been thinking about this for weeks as I did want to enter but couldn't decide how to incorporate a pocket on a card that didn't look like I'd copied one of the DT's cards. Then yesterday I remembered seeing a gift bag on Di's blog 'On The Cards' and a link to a tutorial on Split Coast Stampers for a Box in a Bag so I checked it out and decided that I would make a gift bag for my entry (bag - pocket - same thing isn't it). I used the idea of starting with a shallow box, which then has the bag sides attached, but used my own measurements so that I could make the sides from a strip cut from a sheet of A4 paper. The base of my bag is 1 1/2" x 4" and measures just under 3 1/2" high (excluding the handles). I really enjoyed making this lovely little bag but then began to doubt whether it would qualify as a pocket, so to make doubly sure I added a pocket to the front. I was on a roll then so a strap came next then 'hammered metal' reinforcements created by embossing silver mirri card with a cuttlebug folder, then faux stitching on the pocket. When using this gift bag a small gift tag could be slipped into the pocket - think I'll be making some more of these in different colour combinations.

Penny Black Saturday Challenge

This card was made for the Penny Black Saturday Challenge ... Week 115, which had a sketch to follow. I've stuck quite close to the sketch, which was a problem as I don't have any oval dies, but I got my 'thinking cap' on ond found a way around the problem. I drew a double oval in 'Paint', printed it onto card then cut it out by hand ... I 'm quite pleased with the result. The image is from a sheet of Stickeroos that I've had for ages (Young Things #10-193) I bought a few sheets before I had any Penny Black stamps but this is the first time I've actually used one. The backing paper was received with some Blog Candy so I don't know the manufacturer, ribbon and buttons from my craft box and Prima flowers which were white but have been coloured with ProMarkers then finished with punched flowers and gems.

Winter Greetings

The theme of the week 65 challenge at Passion for ProMarkers is 'Winter blue' so I decided to make this card with just the winter greetings and not specifically as a Christmas card. Now the new challenge starts tomorrow (or should I say today) at 9 am so I am very late posting this but it's been a busy week and then tonight when I tried to get this card finished I had problems with my snowflakes ... or should that be ice crystals. The Cuttlebug die and matching embossing folder were bought before christmas last year and didn't get used much ... now I remember why. Everytime I attempted to cut the shape, parts of it didn't cut through completely, with an extra layer of card it was better but still not cut through properly in the middle. Much wasted card later I gave up and finished a few of them with my scissors (if I wanted to cut snowflakes by hand I wouldn't have bought the die) but after using the embossing folder they looked fine and didn't look like they had been cut by hand. Next problem was the spray adhesive I used to hold the glitter ... not holding would be more accurate as it seems to be falling off, but by this time I had had enough so they will have to do for now, I may take them off and re-do them tomorrow. The stamp was borrowed from a friend and as it's unmounted I don't know who the maker is. The papers were designed by Martine McKnight and are part of a kit that is free to download but I'll have to add the link later.

Birthay card for my son

Todays card was made for my son for his 15th birthday. He plays cricket at our local club, and his team have been very successful this year, so the card from his dad and me had to have a cricket theme. This set of stamps was bought with him in mind but I'm sure it will get used for others too as there is also a footballer and various sentiments.
I'm entering it into this weeks challenge at Cards for Men which is Challenge no 17 - Decoupage. It's A5 size and though not very clear on the photos, several of the elements were stamped twice and attached with Pinflair Glue Gel to add dimension - cap, shirt, gloves, bat, pads and shoes, in addition to the pads in the bottom corner and several of the balls. I don't think Alex realises that there are actually 15 cricket balls on this card - one for every year - I did this rather than spoil the layout by adding a number 15. The club colours are red and black so I was made up when I managed to find this paper - I think it looks quite crickety (is that a real word).

50th Birthday Card in Red

Not a challenge card this time. A colleague asked me to make a 50th birthday card for her friend Jan, who loves the colour red and lives on a farm. Well after a bit of puzzling (quite a lot really) over various animal stamps, I couldn't find one that I was happy with so I abandoned that idea and returned to this layout that I have used before. I went with the red idea and used DP's from Pink Petticoat but looking at it now I think I may have gone overboard with the colour. I'm not entirely happy with the striped paper either ... would have prefered thinner stripes ... but this was the only one I could find. The rubber stamp is by Dimension Fourth and shows a mouse in a champagne glass ... they probably have got mice on the farm though I doubt they give them champagne to drink. The card is A5 size and finished with a length of red ribbon, wine bottle charm and a few clear gems.

FEELING FRUITY

The Penny Black Saturday Challenge ... Week 114 - is FEELING FRUITY

After a look through my PB stamps the only one I could find with fruit was 'Chicky Night' as one of the chicks has a cherry in her drink (a very small cherry). But not wanting to push my luck with this very tiny link to fruit, I put my thinking cap on ... could I use a fruitless image with fruit added from somewhere else ... maybe a hedgie or mouse could be made to carry a piece of fruit, or sit on a piece of fruit, or even appear out of a piece of fruit .... MAYBE NOT.
So I had to turn to my Christmas stamps and use one of the images from my 12 Days Of Christmas Transparent set. One of the DT has used this but I tried to make my card completely different so it wouldn't look like I was copying.
Unusually for me it is A6 size, I don't often make cards this small, but it's going into my 'not for special people' christmas card box ... I think I'll make a batch of these using all the other images in the set. It may not be clear from the photo but the fold is at the top, Pink Petticoat papers, sentiment printed on the pc and three extra pears for added interest.

Guys and Dolls

This card is being entered into challenge # 3 on The Stamp Man Challenge Blog which is Easel Cards - Anything Goes, and challenge # 32 at Charisma Cardz Challenges which is also Easel Cards.

I was asked to make a 'Good Luck' card for an 18 year old girl who is appearing in an amateur production of Guys and Dolls, which is a musical presented by the Palace Theatre Manchester Stage Experience. Her mum asked me to make the card but said that it shouldn't have 'Good Luck' on it as that would be bad luck, instead it should have 'Break a Leg' because that is considered to be good luck ... ???

After a search on the internet ... there are loads of images relating to different productions in different theatres in different countries over many years ... I came up with this design. The story is about gambling, hence the dice and cards, and set in New York so the gold dots represent the windows in the skyscrapers.
The base card is made from A4 black cardstock, folded to A5 size then trimmed slightly to 20cm wide and the front panel is 20cm square. The images of 'card hands' were downloaded from the internet but everything else was drawn and cut by hand. The most time consuming bit was sticking all the 'lights' on, which took ages as they were so small and kept trying to escape.

Christening Cards

Two cards to share that I made a couple of weeks ago. I was asked to make them by a friend, for two seperate Christenings that they were invited to. Although they were for regular Church goers she didn't want them to look overly religeous so I used images from Pink Petticoat but added a jewelled cross. The images were coloured with Promarkers with the frills, bows and wheels layered on top for extra dimension. Although it's not quite clear from the pictures, the mirror card is actually silver. The names and sentiments were printed on the PC and the white ribbon was found in my ribbon box.





My friend was very happy with the finished cards and it seems that the families that they were for, were really happy to receive personalised cards (the inserts included Christening dates in addition to appropriate verses. It's nice when your efforts are appreciated - isn't it?

The base was made from smooth white 300g cardstock and is 15cm square. I began by choosing the image then printing off two matching papers in a green & pink colour scheme. However after colouring the plantpots in terracotta, apricot and pumpkin I decided that they didn't look right with the pink so began a search for something else. Much later ... more papers out and more printed off ... I decided to use these as the colours looked better and I had flowers and ribbon to match. I'm quite pleased with the finished card and now I'm going to see what I can do with the off-cuts ... other than adding them to the ever growing pile.

Wedding Card

The Lili of the Valley Challenge Blog has a sketch to follow for the week 58 challenge. As I bought my first LOTV rubber stamps recently and needed to make a Wedding Card I decided to enter for the first time. I bought 'Wedding Couple' especially for this card but added more just because I liked them.




The card is 19cm square and made from Pearl cardstock in ivory, the image is stamped on the same cardstock and coloured with Promarkers ... I wasn't sure if this would be suitable for colouring with Promarkers but it worked very well, then I added some Glamour Dust. The background paper is by HOTP, from a pad of Wedding themed papers that I have had for a long time - usually just look at them but not any more. I've used gold card for matting, ivory ribbon and pearls and made the paper flowers from plain old copy paper with card candy centers. I took loads of photographs - indoors near the window, on the window sill and outside in the garden - but non show the colours as good as the real thing. Indoors wasn't light enough but outdoors the colours look washed out - but these are the best of the bunch.

Get Funky Challenge - July

The Get Funky challenge for July is 'Something New', and whilst we were on holiday the daughter of some good friends of ours had a baby girl - so a new baby card was the ideal subject for my entry. I had already printed the Pink Petticoat image of a baby girl in a buggy so rustled this card up last night (and I do mean night and not evening) so that I could enter it in the challenge and deliver it today. Now I'm not a big fan of pink so I decided to go with a yellow theme and began my search for suitable papers by looking through the 'Funky Seasons' CD - I always seem to start with this one probably because it was the first Funky Hand CD that I bought. The yellow spotty paper chose itself but then I needed something plain to go with it as I wanted to use my baby themed embossing folder. I did like a peachy coloured paper that I thought would match the spots but when it was printed I wasn't quite right so I ended up with .... pink. Not a colour I would normaly choose but I'm really please with the combination ... it reminds me of ice-cream. I used two copies of the image, coloured with Promarkers, and decoupaged the buggy and parasol with Glue Gel to get a 3D effect. The finishing touch was the ribbon, which I had to colour to match, and a teddy bear charm.

Funky Hand DT call.

Anice at Funky Hand is looking for new members for her design team and as I love Funky Hand papers it was too good of an opportunity to miss. This post is to show some of my work. I had to make a hasty choice of cards to show what I can do so I came up with these, I'm not sure that they are my best however time is not on my side so they will have to do. The first three have been posted on my blog previously. First 'Footy Nut' which I made for my younger son to give to his dad on Father's Day - England's world cup chances were still alive then - but not for long!



This second was also for my husband on Father's Day, from my elder son this time, and I created the background with pieces of real newsprint (sports pages of course) which I inked, scrunched, inked again then flattened before sticking down.

This third card was made for my mum on Mother's Day and looks so much nicer in real life.


This trio of cards were made using the latest CD from Kirsty Wiseman 'Call of the Wild'. I was given the opportunity to use a selection of papers from one of the collections on the CD and these were the result. They were amongst the samples on display when she showcased the CD on Create and Craft TV on July 19th.

Give Us A Laugh ...

... is the Week 59 challenge at Passion for Promarkers. I hope that this card qualifies, it was made for a colleague to give to a golfing friend. She saw one that I made a few weeks ago using this image and said that it would be perfect for her friend who has been known to abuse his golf clubs when his game has been under par. It is A5 size and I used green card for the base as it was a good match for the patterned paper. The white and blue papers have been embosssed with Cuttlebug folders and the image coloured with Promarkers. The sentiments were created on the PC, as was the greeting inside which reads 'Have a TEE-rific Birthday!'

Commissioned card for Aunty Joan.

I've not posted for a couple of weeks as I've not had much time to craft and therefore nothing to share. I did make a quick card for the Headteacher at school as her Aunty was soon to be 90 and she couldn't find a suitable card so asked me to make one. Flowers and pink (plus the number 90) was the brief so I used Whispers by Penny Black ... again ... with some papers from HOTP and silver mirry card. I printed the sentiment directly onto the smooth white card then found a nice verse for the inside and stamped the image again on the left of the insert. I did consider putting a ribbon bow on too but that would have made it too thick for a standard stamp and would have entailed a visit to the PO. I had to take a quick photo before school, as she needed to get it in the post, so it's not great but this was the best of the bunch.


I said a quick card but if I'm honest it wasn't that quick, they never are. Deciding on the stamp, papers and layout then making the card, finding a verse etc took me into the early hours. Still, she loved it and said that her Aunty would be thrilled to see her name on the front (and inside), I asked for £3 (it's A5 size by the way) but she gave me £5 and wouldn't take any change. It's so nice to have your creations appreciated, isn't it?

Father's Day cards

These are the cards I made for my two sons to give to their dad. It's taken ages again to upload photos ... after my recent problems with Mr. Blogger I decided that he perhaps didn't do late nights ... he doesn't seem to like Sundays either.

For this first card, which is 6"x6", I used a Papermania stamp of a man asleep in his chair, hubby does this a lot, surrounded by his newspaper, tv remote and cup of tea. I liked the idea of using some distressed newsprint for the background after watching a demo on the web, so I looked through the sports pages for a suitable piece of the correct size. Unfortunately I couldn't find what I was looking for as I wanted all words without pictures and didn't like the blank spaces between the columns. Then I had the idea of cutting out the column strips and pasting them randomly to create the background (I used Ranger Distress Inks first) and I'm really happy with the result. The image was coloured with Promarkers and the word strips created on the pc.





My second card is A5 size and I have used a free download called 'Soccer Nut' which was a Friday Freebie from Bugaboo Stamps. I printed the image twice, once onto craft card from which I cut out the 'nut' and created texture using a Cuttlebug embossing folder. The rosette was created with scalloped nesties and another free image but I can't remember where I got this from. I love Soccer Nut, he's so cute.

Penny Black Saturday Challenge - Week 105

Late again adding my entry for this weeks challenge over at Penny Black Saturday but I don't know where time goes these days - I look at the challenge each week with the intention of making a card then suddenly it's Friday evening again and I've not got around to uploading my entry. Then of course Mr Blogger goes on a go-slow (he probably thinks he can take the weekend off) but finally he's cooperating. This week there was a sketch to follow which had quite a lot of layers.



And here's my effort ... I've used dark green cardstock to make a 6 inch square card, Bloom and Grow papers from MME and the flower, gems and sentiment stamp are all Papermania. Image coloured with Promarkers .

GRRR ... HE'S NOT REALLY COOPERATING ... JUST DELETED MY CARD PICTURE AND IT'S TAKEN ANOTHER HOUR TO UPLOAD AGAIN.



I really don't know how so many people manage to make cards every day and update their Blogs on a daily basis ... I'm also beginning to think that Mr Blogger doesn't like me ......

Swirls

This card is for the Penny Black Saturday Challenge - week 104. Well this photograph will have to do, the silver mirror card makes getting a good one very difficult and I've taken loads. If I get close enough to show the image well, I can see my own reflection, if I move to the side so as not to see myself the silver card looks black. This was without flash and I was losing natural light, with flash there is even more problems so I'm done. I had a good idea for this card but as happens it got adapted so it's not quite what I had in mind and I'm not starting again or I'll be too late to enter the challenge which is 'Swirls'. It's ok but not one of the best cards that I've made..

Two cards for Danny

It was my elder son's birthday last week and these are the cards I made for him. The first was for his brother to give to him and was made with a Papermania decoupage pack that I bought a few weeks ago. I don't usually buy things like this as I prefer to stamp and colour myself, but after looking at the stamp set that this pack is based on I decided that I wouldn't use the stamps much so bought the decoupage pack instead. It included enough images to make four cards plus co-ordinated backing papers, but such is my willpower that I went back later and bought the stamps too ....... well I needed them, lol.

This second card was from my husband and me and at 21 cms square it's bigger than I usually make. I used 2 sheets of thick A4 card, joined at the spine, to create this. I didn't want anything girly so chose card and papers in shades of plum/burgundy, they do look better in real life, not so dull as they seem here. Added a bit of faux stitching, brads and ribbon for extra interest.

Liam's 9th Birthday card.

The youngest son of our next door neighbours was 9 last Wednesday and I made this cricket themed card for him. Liam plays for the Under 9's team at our local cricket club so I used a green base card and the club colours of red and black. The image stamps are from a Clare Curd set and I used some of the smaller stamps with Versamark to add interest to the background ... not showing up very well in the photos though. The images have been coloured with Promarkers and some of the equipment in the bottom right corner has been attached with foam pads. I wanted a stripey paper in red and green to match the colour scheme but I didn't have anything suitable so had to search through my cd's for a DP. After going through all my Funky Hand discs and Pink Petticoat downloads, without success, I managed to find this one on a Kirsty Wiseman disc, it's just perfect and very 'crickety' I think.

Kirsty Wiseman's 3rd CD

This is the first card I've made with my new CD from Kirsty Wiseman called 'Colour Me Crazy'. There are lots of colour collections and it was difficult deciding which to use first as they are all lovely. There are also lots of cute images which come with both an outline version to colour yourself and a pre-coloured version which is handy if you need to make a card in a hurry. I do like to do my own colouring but at the moment I am making cards with the Y5 children that I work with, for our stall at the School Summer Fayre, and although they are enthusiastic some of the colouring is not quite good enough for cards that you want to sell. With this CD all the children will be able to get a good result, even the ones with limited colouring ability. I made this card as an example for them and used a pre-coloured image but then went over the ribbon with my Sakura clear gel pen for added interest. The small flowers were cut out of the DP then shaped and attached with small foam pads to give them dimensi0n. The sentiment stamp is 'Forever Friends' and came free with a magazine, I used one of my Marvy Brush Markers to ink it up as it was just the right colour to match the papers.
